Has anyone got any new ideas on the security of the spare wheel?

On the new Fortuner, they simply wobble the locked spike until the welding breaks and then the spare wheel is as good as gone.

Something as simple as a bicycle cable lock? One that is coiled, so that it does not swing around?

Good idea... will eliminate maybe a few possible novice criminals, but they tried to steal my Amarok's spare wheel some time ago and cut the cable of.... clean cut... as it was a thin wire.. not sure what they used to do the job

On two of my previous cars I have had the device shown in post no 3. With my present Fortuner I have a very simple device. It works on the same principal as the wheel nuts needing a special socket. See photo below.
