4x2 vs 4x4

Hi guys,

I've been following the forum for close to a year now and have found it helpful more than I can discribe. I would like to thank all of you for this.

Although I only drive the rear wheel drive Fortuner I am quite happy with the machine and found it very capable. I am considering changing to 4x4 though.

Has anybody driven both variants so as to give a proper comparison regarding fuel consumption?

I'm getting a good solid 11km/lt with mine. Truly astonishing for a 3 liter engine in my humble opinion.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Maluti,
There should not be huge difference in the 4x4 vs 4x2 fuel consumption, remember the 4x4 is all wheel drive... but that is only for the d4d shape. The new Fortuner is 2WD as per the previous Hilux and only 4WD when selected.
But because of the weight and moving parts there will be a fuel consumption difference, but dont think its going to be huge.

Now 2010 4x4 I get 8.5 km/l

My 2008 4x4 gets 10,4 Km/ltr
That is open road driving, 6 passengers, towing a trailer, aircon on Full, not going over 120 km/hr.

Not too sure on the fuel aspect as I’ve only ever had the 4x4 version....but if you are into overlanding / camping / African Safari’s etc... having a 4x4 let’s you go to places like The Savuti, Mabuasehube....just to name a few and gives you peace of mind that if the conditions deteriorate you will most likely be ok!

Will prob add to the resale value one day too.
