Fuel Consumption

Hi Members

There are a lot of interest surrounding the topic of Fuel consumption for Fortuners.

I thought I would post something on my experience driving the Fortuner 0D4D 4x4 from 06. In town driving without hitting the peddle to hard I get around 9.6l/100km. This is very average around town for my vehicle. On the open road it really depends on the speed not so much the weight, at least that is what I found.

  • 0-60km/h = 8l/100km which would be the driving speed in the Kgalagadi doing about 800km distance wise. It was a good trip!!!
  • 110-120Km/h = 9.5l/100km which is my preferred driving speed
  • 120 - 140km/h = 10l/100km so not much difference

I do not have any extras in terms of roof tent etc.

It would be nice to know what the V6 is going or maybe those drivers just do measure it...........

I look forward to hearing more and maybe something on the "chip" and if that helps at all. I used to also have a free flow exhaust on my hilux 2.7L with a chip which did help the fuel consumption but I am less sure it makes a difference on the D4D.

Your thoughts!!

On the V6 I get just above 7km/l combined. In town between 6-7 and open road between 7-8. Your average will depend on your cycle breakdown.

My average at the moment is 8.9km/L for the last 30 tanks :(

On the highway I struggle to get close to 10km/L at 110 to 120km/h.....town driving usually around 8.3 to 9.3km/L. When giving it some boot high 7's are not uncommon :( Driving at around 140km/h with some head wind easly gets its below 8km/L!

Use to get up to 11.5 on the open road and +-10.2 in town. People told me the suspension lift causes the heavier fuel consumption but I'm not convinced as it also dropped a lot in town driving! Unfortunately did not measure the consumption before and after the lift so not sure if it is the culprit :D

Yip also got a V6 and get 7.2km/l average. Can get it to 8km/l on the open road if I drive at 100km/h - 110km/h, however it gets thirstier at 140km/h. 4x4 low range between 4.5 and 6 km/l. Tonking it around town about 6.5km/l :)

We did 3700km during Dec with 2 Tuna's. A 2007 4.0 V6 and a 2011 D4D. Every time we filled up there was about 40% difference (The V6 used 40% more fuel). eg. the V6 used 54 ltrs and the D4D used 34ltrs.

D4D on average gets 8.7 km/l. Open road at 120km/h 8.9-9.0 km/l. Heavy traffic 8.3 km/l. Would like to fit a chip, but I have not done much research on the pros and cons. A friend of a friend owns a performance garage, will chat to him and then decide

My D4D used to give me also 8.7km/l. Had the injectors tested and found two of them faulty. Replaced injectors, now fuel consumption is average 9.7km/l.

With 2.5 D4D the consumption plays around a lot. If you put "voet" on the open road the consumption drops to about 10km/l but keep it on 115km/h and it shoots straight up to 12.7km/h - open road - just don't touch the aircon as it drops straight back to 11.5 on the same speed. City driving is sitting @ 10.3km/l

Tailspin,

Mine was replaced on 90000km by Toyota. Went for last service as part of motorplan and asked them to check injectors. Report came back and Toyota wanted me to pay for new set because it is out of motorplan!!

Needless to says I made a huge seen and they conceded that injectors went faulty before 90k. I still don't understand why they don't test injectors regularly, only when requested.

Have your injectors tested before 90k service expires!

Thats good fuel consumption. Hope mine improves once I have the injectors checked.
