Chip tuning????

I've heard about chip tuning and that it can reduced fuel consumption.

What is it exactly? Has anyone did it on a Fortuner and is it really worthwhile?

I have a Unichip and the power increased while consumption stayed the same during normal driving :)

I do not like the plug and play type chips that only increase fuel and not boost so i suggest Unichip installed by a recognised tuner. I used KSD in Cape Town

I have the plug and play made by Diesel Torque. I have done 4000km's with it so far without any issues...? I have not gained in consumption but have gained power...and there is virtually zero lag.

I have looked at the Unichip as a option upgrade.
The 3.0 D4D engine is capable to supply the same torque as the 3L Diesel Prado, and hence you can increase the torque output on the Tuna. But driveline of Prado and Tuna is not the same, as they say there is no free lunch, someting has to go. Toyota did make some changes to the intercooler intake 2012 facelift compared to the 2007, 2009 models. I also did a read on what the guys do Down Under; they have lots of issues with loss of torque due to ineffective intercooling at low speed. Prado's intercooler is fitted in the front grill and receive forced cooling due the the engine fan, the Tuna's intercooler sits ontop and only rely on air flowing over the intercooler with forward speed, no assistance from engine fan. The Ausi's fit a electric airfan between intercooler radiator and bonnet right under intake duct. I am looking into it to fit a fan myself as I notice the same torque loss during slow mountain drives. I do not like messing with the ECU if it is really worth while.

Hi Deon, Very informative and interesting information. Do you have any further info on how they fitted the fan? Maybe you can send pictures if and once you install it. Your info is a great asset to this forum! Keep up the great work.

I have done about 50,000 km since I had SAC install a plug & play. Had them set it up for performance and not fuel consumption. The increase in Nm and kW was impresive and the fuel consumption not worse then before.

I installed it about 30 000 km it has great preformance but i feel that the fuel consumption has lowered what to do? i checked the tuna and found that the disel cooling system was slamed by something, maybe thats the problem and the fuel isent getting by, so i was thinking does it really need the cooling system ived never seen a disel engine with a cooling system what could happend if i would create a direct pass and forget about the cooling system??

see in the Photo it at the top
adivice help?

Iv had some problems with my chip, for the second time and icon has appeared, i scanned it and found out that it was exsessive gas. So i thought well the chip might bad adjusted, i bought it from a hilux( same engine). Send it to be fixed had it intalled again this time with no kyn filtre, i thought maybe so much air flow was the problem. And it Worked for a long time. But the icon reappeard :cursing: so i added a max44(disel fuel cleaner) and on the next tank added 2Stoke the the fuel and changed back to the kyn filter so now the car is at a cleaning cycle and my thought is that maybe the fuel lines were dirty so the chip cannot deliver the fuel properly, the car has to be very to have maintained clean and lubricated so that the chip can really work and need the kyn filter becouse the chip is sucking more air than the original one so it need the kyn filter to really breathe properly. The 2Stroke works like a charm it really sooths the car u can feel and hear the diference. The car autocleans and lubes the engine.

Dastek Unichip

Here is a dyno graph "before and after" fitting a Unichip on a Fortuner 3.0 D4D.

It is widely accepted that you will gain power and torque. And, that you can translate that gain into fuel savings if you drive sensibly. How you use the extra power, is your decision - shared with your right foot. Only if you really hammer the vehicle would you impose additional undue stresses on the motor, in my opinion.

There are as many varying opinions on this matter as there are FT drivers: you consider the evidence and make a choice....

I have a dastek plug and play, its two chips, one for injection and one for boost if i understand correctly.
Its a pre programmed chip so no dyno needed, can be done if fine tuning is needed. Increase in power and consumption!!!

The best i got driving 120

Overall average over 10000km

This includes a bit of lowrange driving on 2 trails

Used to be just over 9km/l

It used to be

I have a Unichip and had it on a Dyno as well.
This past weekend I drove to Nelspruit and my ave. fuel consumption was 13.5 km/l with Speedo cruise on max 140 km/h on GPS.
I am 150% happy with my Chip, Fuel and Performance, and I tow a Sprite Splash from time to time and get between 8 and sometimes 9km/l towing. Towing a normal 6 ft trailer the FT gives me 10 - 11km/l at Max 130 - 140km/h.
As I also said before, The Ford Rangers can not keep up Performanse wise.
I will never ever run my FT without a Chip!!
See Dyno printout.

My Brother does Chips and exhaust systems, Go google JWC Performance , Johan Botha, it help a lot if you add it together with the chip and sounds like a Land Cruiser.
