Bellhousing - oil leak

Fortuner 2007 3.0 D4D 4X4.
At the bottom of the bellhousing there's a spongy type material.
I've just noticed that mine is saturated with what looks and feels like engine oil.
Anyone know what this is a likely indicator of?

The bell housing does not have any oily parts and should be dry - oil can leak from either the engine or gearbox side - you will not have a accurate diagnosis unless you split the two, but being a 10 year old vehicle this could be "sweat" , grime and possibly water all mixed together and trapped by the dust sponge....

It is a toss-up between stripping the vehicle and looking for the root cause or leave it be if oil levels in the gearbox and engine remains unchanged....

Agreed.
Clutch needs to be done at some stage so maybe best to have that done and seal sorted at the same time.
Can anyone recommend the best place to have this done in Brirs/Pretoria/Johannesburg?
