4x4 Training Courses Gauteng

Quite a few courses in and around Gauteng but not sure how many are accredited.

McCarthy Toyota in Pretoria offer a free course to all who buy a 4x4 vehicle from them (new or used) that is great to get you started.

Muhamed, I have done quite a number of grade 4 trails (some felt like 5!)

Any other 4X4 enthusiasts in Gauteng area that would like to join up for some trails in future?

Alfortuner,

I copied your post to a new thread as I think you will get more exposure like this.
If you like I will also add this thread to the newsletter going out later today to see if we can get some of the Gauteng members to stop working and join you :)

I hope that is ok?

Kind Regards

Hey guys...

How many of us Fortuner owners, have been trained and certified?

I am thinking of getting a group initiative to assist others, like myself to become certified 4x4 drivers. I think it is a worthy investment in ourselves as it will teach us to better utilise what we have and also save us and out Fortuners from harms way...

Would anyone be interested?

At the moment 4x4 trails do not insist on certification but it will be coming.

I did the McCarthy course and found it very helpful but they are not certified yet. They do give you a certificate though.

There are a number of certified courses but are quite expensive. Some are even over 2 days.

I would definitely be interested in an advanced course at some stage but first want to see what requirements for certification will be required once it becomes enforced.

The Toyota Halfway Honeydew course is also not certified - but you do obtain a certificate at the end.

You are right about some being expensive - but with group buy in, it becomes bearable. Also depends on who the instructors are aswell. I may be wrong but I have heard that the guy at Bass lake is quite able and since he has his own venue, its easier to facilitate this aswell...just a thought...

Sounds good. I will investigate. If the course is worth it I'm in. We can also discuss over the braai at the GTG.

TJ put me in contact with a company that specialises in 4X4 training.

They provide a certified 2-day course and can do it anywhere in the major centres.

It may be possible that they can give us a discount if we are quite a large group.

Let me know if you would be interested and I will PM more info. We could turn this into a Gauteng Fortuner 4X4Fans weekend! :phat:

Guys, still a little bit concerned...

What exactly do we do here? This seems to be theory and proper instruction on how to use our vehicles. Does it cover any basics in recovery, etc. Sorry for the hassle, just trying to figure out if we will be sitting in a class for the 2 days... :whistling:

Will we also be allowed to use the venues to do our own off-roading adventure as well? (another Fortuner4x4fans adventure) - time dependant offcourse...

Is there a maximum number just incase we dont get place by taking too long?

In order to get accustomed to all obstacles and recovery techniques, would we need to look for an alternative training course?

Sorry for the millions of questions... :S

Hi Avi

There will be a lot of practical driving as well. I am quite sure there will be some instruction on safe recovery but this is not an advanced recovery course.

The guy told me that this is for beginners and veterans. Part of the training is on preserving nature but I think we can all learn a lot.

Please feel free to forward any questions to the company. They are quite happy to address any concerns you may have.

hi Alan

I also need to book. Spoke to Tinus. Would like have like the advanced recovery, but either way, you need this course to be done as a pre-requisite - just note this point for any other guys like me who want to run before they walk...lol

Tinus will book a venue on Friday after the guys book. I am def in.

We need some more great guys in great cars as Alan clearly put it...
