Epic Bots/ZIm/Zambia trip

Hi guys,

Firstly, just wanted to introduce myself to all the members. I'm new here but looking forward to getting involved.

More importantly, me and a team of three others, including Fortunator, are set to embark on a mammoth 7 week, 5,000kms+ trip through Zambia, with a week in Botswana and a couple of days in Zim along the way.

We leave from Cape Town tomorrow.

The main aim of our trip is to update and grow the zambiatourism.com website which we have all been involved in since the new site was launched in 2013, while I myself have also been commissioned to write the 'VIctoria Falls' chapter of the new Fodor's 'Complete Guide to African Safaris' guidebook. But it's also going to be a great excuse to get off the beaten track and spend some quality time in the bush.

Our trailer is all packed up and ready (with plenty of cold ones in the fridge) and we are all raring to go.

Our itinerary looks something like this at the moment:

18th-22nd September: Madikwe and Welgevonden
22nd-25th September: Nxai Pans
25th- 28th September: Chobe
28th- 29th September: Victoria Falls
29th September- 3rd October: Livingstone
3rd- 5th October: Lusaka
5th- 8th October: Lower Zambezi National Park
8th- 12th October: South Luangwa National Park (booked with Tracks and Trails)
12th- 13th October: North Luangwa, Camp Chibembe
13th- 15th October: Bangweulu, Nkondo Camp
15th- 19th October: Lake Tanganyika
19th- 20th October: Bengweulu
20th- 23rd October: Kasanka
23rd- 25th October: Ndola
25th- 26th October: Salwezi
26th- 31st October: Kafue National Park
31st October- 1st November: Mongu
1st- 4th November Liuwa Plains
4th- 5th November: Sioma Ngwezi National Park

Here is a map with our route:

And here's a couple of images of the team and Fortunator's Honey Badger, our trusty steed for the trip, with all its new trimmings:

We will be keeping you posted with our stories and images from the road on this forum, and also on the news page of the zambiatourism.com site, so spread the word and watch this space!

In the meantime, if any of you have any insider's tips, info or contacts that might help us at any stage along the way, please post them in this thread. Or let us know if you happen to be crossing our path on your own trip somewhere, and we'll make a plan to sit down and swap some stories and a few beers.

See you on the road!

Howzit Guys.

So we now officially into Zambia after an AWESOME first week of the trip in Bots. We camped for a few days in Nxai Pans and then a few more days on the banks of the Chobe. Whilst in Chobe we were lucky enough to see 3 lioness take down a buffalo. Awesome stuff.

Fortunator's "Honey Badger" gave us a bit of trouble between Nata and Kasane - few issues with the alternator. But after a day of fiddling around under the bonnet hopefully all's well again.

We now in Livingstone and heading towards Lower Zambezi in a few days.

More updates to come. In the meantime, here are a couple of images from the road so far.

Enjoy!

Cheers,

Chris

Howzit Guys,

We finally back from our EPIC trip through Zambia. Amazingly, we made it one piece and so did our Fortuner, except for a busted alternator and a couple of flat tyres.

One major lesson learned from the trip: Zambian "roads" certainly aren't for the faint of heart, especially if you are travelling with a trailer as we were!

Stunning Liuwa Plains at the end of the trip was an absolute highlight, but for future reference trailers are going to be banned in this park soon.

Other highlights for me were Lake Tanganyika and South Luangwa, while the toughest roads were the two escarpments out of the northern sections of Lower Zambezi National Park and South Luangwa. But that's all part of the fun.

Anyone on the forum heading this way anytime soon, you'll have a blast. Get in touch if you want any tips, or you can have a look at my trip reports on http://www.zambiatourism.com/news.

In the meantime, here are a couple more photos from the trip.

Enjoy guys!
